Ralph and the boys face the challenge of surviving all alone with no adults. The group splits due to disagreements, and Ralph ends up being hunted by Jack’s group. His hope is lost, but three boys give him the motivation he needs. Through the objections Ralph faces on the island, Piggy, Simon, and Samneric give him the hope, focus, and support to understand what is really important. Simon is a very sensitive, curious, and empathetic person. Simon knows that Ralph is worried that they won’t get rescued, but he believes there is hope. In the book, Ralph fears of the ocean thinking of it as a barrier and how there’s no escape. Simon comforts Ralph to help him stay hopeful for the future. Simon has a characteristic of being thoughtful. Ralph and he built the shelters for the boys. Simon voluntarily offers to go across the island to tell Piggy about the journey with Ralph and Jack.
