It is possible to change the way you show love as a parent figure. Darry begins the novel by yelling at Ponyboy for everything. He keeps yelling at him, when it comes to staying in school, and being home on time. Ponyboy feels unloved because, Darry is too strict and harsh on him. In many ways Darry is overwhelmed at being responsible for two younger brothers and seems resentful. Darry works all the time and has little time to be a friend, or a close brother. He treats Ponyboy like he is six. Darry changes throughout the novel after he slapped Ponyboy, and he disappeared. After Darry and Ponyboy meet at the hospital, Darry is able to show how much remorse he felt for hurting Ponyboy. Ponyboy sees the marked change in Darry when he observes:
