Jack - I think that Jack is influenced by the thought of having power. This is because he is willing to do whatever it takes in order to gain control. For example, “They hate you, Ralph, they’re going to do you, They’re going to hunt you tomorrow, But why?, I dunno” (Golding 188). This quote shows that Jack is willing to kill the other leader in order to gain full control. Ralph - Ralph is influenced by the thought of a normal authority. For example Ralph says, “The thing is: we need an assembly” (Golding 78). This quote shows how Ralph always tries to keep things civilized by calling meetings to work things out because he did not want violence. This is caused by many events that happen throughout their time on the island. For example Ralph changes because he has to grow up too early because there are no adults/authority on the island to take care of them. Therefore, he is expected to change and mature at just twelve years old. “There aren’t any grownups. We shall have to look over ourselves” (Golding 33). Many of the boys are also overtaken by the fear of the beast. For example, the littluns have nightmares and trouble sleeping at night. “Last night I had a dream, a horrid dream, fighting with things. I was outside the shelter by myself, fighting with things, those twisty things in the trees” (Golding 84). Jack also has to take charge when it comes to hunting, but the first time he did he ended up being scared to kill a pig. “There came a pause, a hiatus, the pig continued to scream and the creepers to jerk, and the blade continued to flash at the end of a bony arm” (Golding 31). All of these examples show how their normal society is tearing away. The boys now have to take care of themselves and learn to do what adults usually have to do. This causes some of the boys to fall out of civilization because they don't know how to behave without authority. For example Jack turned to violence in order to feel like there was some kind of control, but Ralph always tried to keep organization and stability in their lives. Even outside the novel, this can happen to us in real life. For example, when people feel like they are growing up too fast they may have too much experience at a young age. This may cause these people to almost raise themselves and create their own personality because they had no adult influence to look up
