Relationships are the most important part of good literature. In The Lord of the Flies, Ralph and Piggy start with a bad relationship, but it improves over time as Ralph begins to sympathize with Piggy. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet’s relationship affects each other immensely, with them both committing suicide because of their love for each other. In Of Mice and Men, George is like a guardian to Lennie as he cares for him, and both characters think of each other as friends. Throughout all these passages, the characters are greatly affected by their relationships with other characters, causing them to change their views, develop a characteristic, or do things they wouldn’t have done without their relationship. In Romeo and Juliet, Romeo and Juliet coming to know each other also greatly impacts their thinking and their development. Both these characters have not been in a relationship, and before they meet each other, they don’t take dangerous risks. After they meet each other and fall in love immediately, they both take risks to meet each other, something they have not done before. An example of this is the balcony scene, where Romeo risks his life to visit Juliet. Juliet says “If they do see thee they will murder thee”(2.2.96) when talking about what his relatives would do to Romeo. This shows Romeo's character development because before his relationship with Juliet he would have never done something so bold like this. His relationship with Juliet is what pushes him to take more risks to see her even if he is risking his safety to do so. Like Romeo, Juliet’s character also develops because of their relationship.
