The Lord of the Flies has many different influences on religion and society. The pig’s head, and the conch shell both gave the boys things to believe in and trust on the island. Some wanted rescue and to follow society, these boys followed the conch shell as it give them a sense of that old society, rules and regulations, keeping the fire burning smoke to give nearby ships a chance of knowing the boys are there. Some wanted to have fun and survive, thought it was all a game, those mostly followed and trusted the pig’s head as an offering to the “beast,” fearing if the pig’s head wasn’t there the beast would kill them. This formed a sense of society among the boys. An example of this is where Roger was throwing rocks at Henry, but was aiming to miss because there was a sense of society, and he was used to not being able to do things like that, therefore, he didn’t hit Henry with the rocks. The conch created a religious environment. People follow their religion with passion, and they let their God guide them. This is what the conch did to the boys. It gave them hope of rescue. The boys believed in the conch, and sure, they still believed in God, the conch was like a god to them, giving them advice without them realizing it and providing a sense of security.
