Many Features of a Single Mask Often times, masks are used to hide the faces of their wearers so they cannot be identified. William Golding’s survival novel Lord of the Flies directly contradicts this concept by explaining a mask as something that shows the wearer’s true nature and identity. I have created a mask that represents aspects of my personality and character. The majority of artistic decisions made about the mask, its shape, and color scheme were made for a reason. The base of the mask is white which is then surrounded by red in the shape of an explosion of sorts; this symbolizes my bright, loud personality that only my friends and family are familiar with versus the plain personality others see. It is supposed to be vibrant and in your face like I am when with people I am comfortable around. This characteristic of mine hardly ever comes to light when I am surrounded by people I do not know well. The shape and color of the area make the mask unique and eye catching. An aspect of my personality that I show to the majority of people I come in contact with is being quiet and withdrawn, which is visually represented on the mask by the blue covering the mouth area. Even though it is what I most commonly show to others, I would not consider it to be truly what I am like. The lack of mouth makes my mask look far more simple and without features, similarly to being quiet. The ability to accept differences in others is a trait that I am very pleased to possess and that I have had to work on for some time.
