True Possession The qualities a leader possesses can ultimately decide how a society survives, as well controlling the level of peace within the civilization. One of the many qualities that a leader must possess is that they are selfless. A true leader will not put himself/herself above everyone else, they will simply guide the society into the right path. There is an excellent example of this trait in the novel, Lord of the Flies. “There’s no man with a trumpet. Only me.” (20). The character that states this quote, Ralph, illustrates this quality by, even though being the leader of the island, he isn’t making it a point that everyone should know that he is the leader. Another quality that leaders must have is being fearless in situations other will tremble. Ralph demonstrates this in many ways, but the most prominent way he does this is found in this quote, “His mouth was tight and pale. Peace is a hard concept to keep under control. Leaders must tend to everyone’s individual needs and make sure they do not conflict with other’s needs. Eventually, the concept of peace will fall from the leader’s hands and chaos will arise. As found in the novel, Lord of the Flies, peace is doomed to crumble. In the start of the novel, the boys are following the rules and working together, though as soon as jealousy is a contender, arguments and rebellion arises. When talking the world of men, everlasting peace does not and will never exist because jealousy exists. Mans fatal flaws keep the world from being the ideal paradise societies dream of. Whether it be due to the people within the society or the environment the society is in. Leadership is difficult task that has to be taken on by some though the ones that do are not always
