Think of a time when you may have known what you were doing was wrong. Then say you had no parents there to discipline you. Would you still do the thing you knew was wrong? In the novel “Lord of the Flies” by William Goulding this is the reality for the characters in the book. The theme of the story is that innocence can easily be lost when there is no discipline.

When he uses the words “closed in on the struggling pig” it is symbolizing that the boys are closing in on their innocence and losing it, the “struggling pig” is their innocence. But they say “knowledge to show that even though he did it, he was aware of his actions. He is essentially the most sane on the island. “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hand.”(pg. 72) In this quote it becomes clear that Simon wanted to help. He may be one of the only to maintain his innocence. By selecting the words”pulled off the choicest” shows that Simon wanted to help the little kids and give them the best. He uses “the endless” as a hyperbole to show that many are in need of help. He uses “outstretched hands” to symbolize him holding on to his youth and innocence.
