In every novel, there are both weak and strong characters, and they are treated differently by each other. In William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies there is not exception, the strong are the ones who take over the island. The ones who are considered weak follow the actions of the strong and they listen to what they say.
The first reason why the strong are the ones who take over the island is shown through the different types of respect the boys have for the weak and the strong boys. First of all, the boys only seem to have respect for the stronger ones rather than the weaker ones. This can be seen when Piggy answers Ralph about how many people are left, “ ‘There’s some littluns.’ Ralph replies with ‘They don’t count. No biguns?’ ” (Golding 171). The strong also show power through the way that Jack is treated after he shows that he has the strength to kill. This can be seen in this quote, “Jack was standing before a small group of boys” (146). This shows that after Jack left the group, the others still felt that he was stronger than Ralph as he had already killed a pig and Ralph had not, therefore making Jack stronger and Ralph weaker. A final reason how the strong show their power through their treatment of the other boys is the way they attack Simon. This can be seen when Simon is coming out of the trees, “The beast [Simon] was on its knees in the centre, its arms folded over its face.” (168). This shows that once the boys felt they were stronger than their prey they would attack it without
