Set amongst the desolate Icelandic landscape, Hannah Kent explores the life of a convicted murderer, Agnes Magnúsdóttir in her novel, Burial Rites. By allowing Agnes to have a voice, Kent encourages to see that her death is not only a by-product of Agnes choices, but also due to the judgement of the society that she lived in. This society in which powerful men with status are the rule for life and death, both unfair and prejudiced. Thus, through 'Burial Rites ' Kent seeks to explore how Agnes 's death sentence cannot be blamed purely on her actions, but also on the unforgiving society that punishes those who are disadvantaged. Kent uses a range of techniques to explore that nothing can be blamed purely on fate.
The discussion was more emotional, as we were all moved by her writing. Didion’s style of writing resembles that of a normal thought process. She is not writing rationally, she writes about her irrational actions and thoughts. She describes herself as “demented” during her first stages of grieving (Didion 125). The way she describes John’s, her husband, death is as if she lost part of her soul when she lost him.
In Reagan’s eulogy Thatcher uses pathos to unite herself with the audience, through the mutual feelings of grief and sorrow over losing a friend. In the opening lines of the eulogy Thatcher creates pathos by using diction. In lines one and two Thatcher said that a “Great President… Great American… Great man….” has died. Her choice of using the word great instead of good or any other adjective, effects the audience by showing what kind of man Reagan was. Since death is a universally known topic, it is safe to say that everybody has experienced the pain of losing a great person to death.
Mitford takes note that “not one in ten thousand has an idea of what actually takes place” (310) and there is so much more beneath the surface of things. Mitford also uses oxymorons such as, “he has done everything in his power to make the funeral a real pleasure for everybody” (314). It’s clear that a funeral isn’t a “pleasure”, it’s an incredibly sad experience (for most people) and it just goes to show the depth Mitford will go to portray her aggressive opinions. As Mitford continues to describe the shocking details about embalming she gets into a routine and systematically gives us disconcerting imagery every other paragraph, such as, a corpse “whose mouth had been sewn together” (312). Thatcher’s purpose to speak about President Ronald Reagan was to show how great of a leader Reagan was during the political upheaval during the Cold War. She adopts a heartwarming tone in order to show the citizens of the United States the level of leadership and heroism he incorporated when trying to prevent two countries from the destroying the Earth and humanity itself. In an eulogy to former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister of Great Britain, addresses a speech in honor of Reagan. Throughout the eulogy, Thatcher informs Americans all of the amazing work Reagan did during his presidency and how he is a great person. Using examples of the work Reagan did, Thatcher states acknowledges those ideas in order to keep his legacy alive. Thatcher opens and closes her eulogy by directly addresses it to the American citizens in a warm and proud tone.
It’s clear that he has no feelings of sorrow for this family as he says things like: “ *About her death* Will be on the news tonight, I reckon. That 'll be good. No, that 's not good.” and: “She 's what the kids would call a slut, which is a terrible thing to say about someone who 's just died, but apparently there 's no denying she was one.” He is portrayed in a feminine and over-dramatic with endless amounts of hyperbole.
In “The Funeral,” the narrator Henry James shows condescending and playful tone towards the people attending the funeral. But not being focus on the actual funeral and drawing his attention to the people, he grieve at all, as you usually do in a funeral. The author’s diction expresses his mischievous attitude toward the funeral. When the first arrives, he points out that the elements of “groteque” was noticeable.
When people are traumatized by an event they are pushed to experience the five stages of grief. The “Gospel”, by Philip Levine and “the boy detective loses love”, by Sam Sax both use characters that are going through one of the stages of grief. Levine and Sax both explain the thoughts and process of what a person thinks when they go through these stages with imagery. Levine uses symbolism, a sad tone, and a set setting in “Gospel” to illustrate that grieving takes you into a depth of thoughts. Sax uses anaphoras, an aggressive tone, and an ambiguous setting to convey that grieving takes you into a tunnel of anger and rage.
The invasion of Mars by Earthlings in “The Martian Chronicles” by Ray Bradbury causes both Martians and Earthlings to suffer from several different consequences. There are many instances in “The Martian Chronicles” where these consequences are shown indirectly. Some fatal consequences formed by the invasion of Mars include innocent deaths, the spread of insanity, sorrow, loneliness, confusion, chaos, and the growth of an unwanted second Earth on Mars. Overall, since the 1st expedition of Earthlings traveling to Mars, things have digressed.

Today, most people would assume that the reaction to a loved one’s death would be immediate grief; however, that would not be the case in the late 1800s. In Kate Chopin’s “The Story of An Hour” women were expected to grieve differently than men. The story conveys the main character Mrs. Mallard’s distress and joy after she discovered the supposed death of her husband. The story does not demonstrate Mrs. Mallard following the stages of grief that would be expected when grieving over her husband. In spite of the fact that Mrs. Mallard was grieving she was likewise encountering joy and satisfaction since she then realizes that she is currently free.
