A raisin in the sun talks about a poor African American family during the 1940’s. every person in the younger family had dreams but due to the financial issues, they could never accomplish them. After older Walter’s (Father) death, their dreams could come to reality with the $10,000 insurance check. Walter lee is a good example of a characters dream that went down the drain because of financial trouble. With the insurance money, Walter lee wanted to buy a liquor store with three of his buddies.

The Youngers are set to receive an insurance check worth $10,000 dollars. The play is based around how the Youngers will spend the insurance check. In A Raisin in the Sun, the concept of a new life and wealth as a sign of success play hand in hand as the family struggles over how to spend the insurance check.
Her most famous work was A Raisin in the Sun which was “set against a backdrop of overt racism and pervasive housing discrimination in the 1950s (#8 59). In this work, a black family has just lost their patriarch, Big Walter Younger, and is trying to decide what to do with the ten-thousand dollar life insurance policy that they have been awarded. The story line focuses on each member of the family’s different opinion of what should be done with the money. While Lena Younger, the late Big Walter’s wife, would like to invest the money in buying a home in a better neighborhood so that her family can enjoy the kind of home that they deserve, Walter Lee, her son, believes that he should be allowed to use the money as an investment in a liquor store so that he can support the family and have some of the nicer things that life offers. His wife, Ruth, says that she would rather have more space for her their son, Travis, and her unborn child than anything else.
When people are poor, they often have a lot of problems in their life. They struggle through every day, but they learn to appreciate everything that they have. However, when people are going through tough times, they often think that money will solve all of their problems. In “A Raisin In The Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry, she guides the audience through a black family living on the south side of Chicago that was impacted by the need for money. The Younger family gets an insurance check from the death of Lena Younger’s husband that is used to buy a house in a white neighborhood, to pay for Beneatha Younger’s medical degree, and to try and start a liquor store.
The title of the play “A Raisin in the Sun” comes from the poem “Harlem” written by Langston Hughes. The poem is asking what happen to dreams that are not accomplished, What happens to a dream deferred?/ Does it dry up/ Like a raisin in the sun (Hughes) in the play many character have unaccomplished or deferred dreams. Mama dreams is moving her family out of their small apartment and into a house in a nice area with a yard for Travis and a garden for herself. She has had this dream for a long time but has never been able to accomplish it financially. After the death of her husband, the family receives a $10,000 life insurance check this money gives mama of the opportunity to buy the house she has always dreamed for her family.
One example of this is Curley's wife's dream of being an actress. Her dream was affected by her mother who took her letter. When Curley's wife was younger she had two separate chances to become an actress, once when she was a kid and a kid from a traveling show told her she should go with the show and be an actress. Another time was when she met someone who said she was a natural and that he was gonna put her in the movies. Both times her mother made it so she couldn't go.

Lorraine V. Hansberry Author Lorraine Hansberry, who is considered one of the Great American authors, wrote during the Modernist period. She wrote “A Raisin in the Sun” in 1959. In this work, we can see evidence of the characteristics, themes and style identified with the Modernist movement which was extant in American letters between 1850’s and after WWII. Lorraine Hansberry wrote during this time period of American literature, and such, remains one of the most identifiable and iconic writers of her time. Lorraine Hansberry was born on May 19, 1930 in Chicago, Illinois.
The Great Gatsby by Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald portrays this exact idea by comparing characters such as Daisy and Tom who came from wealth to Jay Gatsby and George Wilson who worked for their money. What this means is that characters like Tom and Daisy use money to avoid problems and buy pleasure. This influences the irony of avoiding difficulties with money because, throughout the story, money is what attracts problems. The story revolves around what happens to the family when Lena Younger, the matriarch of the family, receives a ten thousand dollar life insurance check upon the death of her husband. Everyone from the family has different plans for what they want to do with the money. Lena Younger serves as the head of the family. She is Walter and Beneatha’s caring mother so they and Ruth call her Mama.

In the story “A Raisin in the sun” the author Lorraine Hansberry shows how a family is changed by the lust of money. A widow, Lena, her son Walter Younger, his wife Ruth and daughter Beneatha all lived under the same roof. Lena just lost her husband and is receiving a check for his death. With the money, Lena wants to buy a new house for the whole family to live in but everyone else in the family sees a different type of opportunity.
