The Symbolism of Me… The Plant Symbolism is everywhere, like carbon dioxide needed for me to live. In case you did not know already symbolism is the picture or symbol that represents something else. Just like how a rose represents love. In the drama “ A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry I, the Plant, represent everything Mama went through. “A Raisin in the Sun” starts later on in Mama’s life in 1959.She lives in Southside Chicago, where she owns the house that her daughter Beneatha, son Walter, his wife Ruth and their son Travis live in. When her life is going well, I am growing and thriving. On the other hand,when Mama is going through hard times I begin to die. This may all sound very confusing but I am there throughout the whole drama. I first appear on pg 39 of the drama when "(Mama) She crosses through the room, goes to the window, opens it and brings in a feeble little plant growing doggedly in a small pot on the windowsill. She feels the dirt and places it back out." Like me, Mama's life is barely hanging on by a thread. She is fighting to survive and just living day by day. Another example is when the book says "Lord, if this little old plant don't get more sun than it's been getting it ain't never going to see spring again"(pg 40) When Mama is saying this she is also talking about her life. What is meant by this is, if nothing happens in her life,it change the way it is it might not last much longer either. This is not necessarily meant in a way that her life will end, but more of her hope and dreams will die. Lastly indirectly I'm mentioned in the book when it says "Slowly she opens her package and lifts out, one by one, a brand-new sparkling set of gardening tools."
