The story would be very different if it was set in another time or place because of various reasons. Depending on the era, the Loser’s Club, which is comprised of the seven main characters in the story, would probably be much safer, have different ideologies or have different personalities overall.

If the story would have been set in a time when the human race has established colonies all over the galaxy, readers would most likely find them to have different fears. This alteration would reshape the story significantly as the concept of the ways IT does to terrorise the children stems from his preferred false appearance, Pennywise the dancing clown. An example of a place that would allow the story to differ an impressive amount would be South Africa. Around the time that ‘It’ is set in, South Africa would be booming with apartheid which would significantly affect the story as Mike Hanlon, one of the main characters possesses a black skin colour. He would be harassed much more frequently and more severely. Mike’s bombardments with racial slurs could lead him to depression, and even worse, suicide.

To conclude, the story would be very different depending on the time and place. In an era where we colonise the galaxy, IT’s character would have to be basically reconstructed. In a place like South Africa, the story differ in plenty of ways such as the frequency and the severity of Mike’s harassments from bullies.

If the story had not ended like it did, it could have degraded the story. I found the end to be nostalgic and delightful but still fitting. Another way it could have ended would be by a tragic and thought provoking path where all the members of the Loser’s Club die to IT. Assuming no other people would challenge IT’s formidable, ironclad grasp on Derry, IT would be able to continue to feast on the souls and bodies of a countless number of children in the town for what would probably be eternity. I personally do not think this ending would improve the story as I am one for a happy
