In the book, Lost and Found, Mykaela Graham uses the lives of 5 teens and one tragic event to bring out their true selves. Due to the death of their friend Ryder, all of their lives turn upside down after they grieve her. While they grieve, they all became more destructive, just like Ryder. In the context of this story, the quote is true and false. I will now give you examples of the true and the false.
The main characters of the story are Spencer, Ryder, Sage, Jazlyn, Aiden and Melanie. With the exception of Spencer, when Ryder commits suicide, they all become destructive and careless. They begin to drink, smoke, and party all the time. Sage, being a pastor’s daughter, changes because she feels suffocated by the image she has to uphold. Jazlyn regains an addiction to pills, which causes her to hurt her sister. Aiden begins to party even harder than he does and fight with his abusive father. Melanie gets too caught up into the scene and guys, that she ends up being a prostitute. Spencer is Christian, with stage 4 bone cancer, that just wants to bring her friends to Jesus. Their lives all change drastically when the darkness of Ryder’s death begins to overtake them.

Spencer was the only one capable of holding on to herself. After their loss, all of their problems were out. Abusive parents, unrealistic images, addictions, and sickness were all right in front of their faces. They were forced to figure it all out without a clue. It led to even more loss, but this time, themselves. So, their true character did come out when they were in
