Lord of the Flies is a book about the savagery of human nature, emphasized when a group of British schoolboys crash land on an island, and attempt to rule themselves, ending in tragedy. Lost, a T.V show loosely based on the Lord of the Flies, is about a group of airplane passengers who also crash onto an unknown island, and have to try and survive until or if rescue comes. Both tell stories of a group of stranded people, trying desperately to survive and fend for themselves on an island that seems otherworldly. They share many parallels, for example, both portray a “beast” or monster that wreaks havoc on the survivors. Many of the characters share similarities as well. He says, “No, I’m not. I just think you’ll get back alright.” (Golding 111) in response to Ralph when he calls Simon “batty”. Simon thinks that Ralph will eventually make it off the island, and as it turns out, he was correct. In the end, Ralph winds up being rescued along with most of the other boys. Simon also might have predicted his own death. During his vision with the Lord of the Flies, the pig’s head says this: “-Or else,” said the Lord of the Flies, “we shall do you? See? Jack and Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you. See?” (Golding 144). It is exactly what happened, as all the boys lost themselves in the evil of their soul, swept up in the fear, the feeling of absolute power over another being, and the ability to do anything without fear of consequence. The boys, all of them, brutally murdered him when they mistakened him for the beast. Simon kept a secret until it was too late. He saw the true savagery and evil of human nature, and didn’t warn Ralph and Piggy.
