Lost Colony of Roanoke To lead the establishment of the first British Colony in the New World was a huge goal by many. The big picture for England was to Colonize as much land as they possibly could before Spain had a chance to do it first. With Spain being the enemy of England, Queen Elizabeth I became intrigued in Colonization of the New World as Spain started to plan a possible successful Colonization. Elizabeth used this opportunity to start a race against their rivals in creating a Colony that would occupy the Island of Roanoke with plans to extend farther inland after settling successfully on Roanoke. Once these two scouters confirmed a location good enough for a settlement they returned to England to notify Elizabeth that the Colony was able to start traveling to the New World. Not many people involved with the colonization expected many problems the colony dealt with just in a year span of their arrival. The colony consisted of 100 men that volunteered to become colonists with Raleigh leading them they land on the Island in April of 1585 with 100 men ready to become Colonists. For some time in the first year of settlement the colony was able to stay in good terms with the native peoples for awhile, but when resources became increasingly low the survival rate also started to drop with the terms with native peoples going bad. Because of supplies running out faster than expected the colonists used Violence against the native peoples which many people from both sides died with the rest of the colonists already seeing their chance of survival start to disappear more the longer they were to stay on the Island. Once they were able to obtain a way off the Island they retreated back to their original homes in England, in 1856.
