Lou Gehrig Lou Gehrig was one of the biggest and best athletes in the 1930’s. He also was one of the most influential people of his time. He played baseball for the New York Yankees and during that time he earned the name Iron Horse for the consecutive games he played in his career. His career was cut short by ALS which is now named after him since he was one of the first very famous person to ever to contracted the disease. He is often referred to as one of the best baseball players of all time for his countless achievements and the legacy he left.

(Biography) Even with team success going down, Lou still countied to be one of the best players ever of the time even winning the Triple Crown in 1934 and making the All-Star time all 3 years. (Biography) Also during this time, He married Eleanor Twidell September 29,1933 in which he stayed married to until his death. (Biography) After the 3 losing seasons the Yankees and Lou bounced back to win 3 straight World Series titles. (Encyclopedia) He continued to dominate the game of baseball throughout the 1930’s not missing a game and in the 1937 Lou Gehrig had officially broke the consecutive game mark by playing his 2,130 consecutive game which untamiltey gave him the name “Iron Horse” for his durability throughout his entire team. (American Classic) This did not last for long for in 1938, Lou hit under .330 for the first time since 1925, this is when it became apparent that something was wrong with him. (Biography) After a terrible start to the 1939 season, he ended up benching himself and on June 19th, 1939 after 6 days of testing it was determined that Lou Gehrig the Iron Horse had ALS ending his baseball career.
