Thomas Jefferson and the Louisiana Purchase There were many advantages and disadvantages to the Louisiana Purchase for President Thomas Jefferson. Some of the advantages include: the US acquiring the port at New Orleans preventing war with France, the purchase doubled the land area of the US, and it displayed the ways of peace in American affairs. While there were several advantages, there were also disadvantages that came along with them. These included: Jefferson having to put aside his principles about the Constitution, Jefferson’s friendly foreign politics with France were compromised, and the obvious debt that came with the purchase.
