Love, Glory, and the Male Mind
Love and battle have been compared and interchanged many times. Whether it be cliche quotes such as, “all is fair in love and war,” or in works of art such as poems and songs, love is constantly put in the same category as war. Many think these comparisons strange due to the fact that love and war are almost opposites. Love is meant to be a bond while war is possibly as separated two groups can get. This is not the case, however, for the male mind. As seen in many works by various authors, the male brain sees love as a war-like conquest. Joseph Heller and other authors use the actions of men in their stories to display how the conquest for glory and sex is the driving force behind the male mind, leading to results that are not favorable for anyone involved.
In the book, Heller displays a strong treme of Glory. Glory is the goal of the men in the book. They are all different, but they all want to be heroes. This is why they joined the military. While describing the main character, Heller says “He was going to live forever, or die in the attempt.” This shows the mindset that the soldiers in the book share. The way the men interact with women shows their exact intentions. They only want sex. In fact, the only real interactions with women that occur are through prostitution. This is the easiest way for a man to skip the hardships of relationships and still receive the glorious prize, sex. This is all the men really care about. This view of love as a conquest is further reinforce when one of the soldiers thinks he has fallen in love with a prostitute. This soldier’s name is Nately. After Nately falls in love, he is ridiculed for it, and the others think he is crazy. This love of Nately’s is the cause of much trouble throughout the novel, including his own death. Nately’s struggle to even try to love a woman proves nearly impossible, and it is shown to be a very bad
