“You cannot love a fellow-creature fully till you love God.”(Lewis 91) Love for God must come before and above all other love. In order to love others fully you must first love God. Once you love God with all your heart, your heart is rebuilt with the space for all love. The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis explores how love is portrayed differently in Heaven, Hell, and on Earth. The way to Hell is the easiest journey for most humans. "And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.”( Matthew 25) Although the unrighteous souls live in hell, there is a way for them to relocate to heaven as righteous souls. If the souls have passion and commitment, that can take the long road to Heaven. Hell shows us that love corrupts people if they do not love God. It is impossible to love others fully, if you do not put God first. God is not on the minds of the people in Hell because they are able to will anything into existence. Without a direct need for God, humans struggle to put their faith in him. The story of Pam and Michael is an example of love being corruptive. Pam loved her son Michael so much that when he died, she couldn’t let him go. Pam obsessed over the little things from his life, causing her to push away her family and leave them alone. When Pam dies she doesn’t have the commitment to travel to heaven to live with Michael, so instead she says that he should come live with her in Hell. (Lewis chapter 11) This is an example of Pam not being willing to sacrifice her love for the happiness of others because she thinks that they can live the happy life in Hell as they had on Earth.
