Here’s a startling statistic: “HUMBLE.,” a song by Kendrick Lamar, has recently hit #1 on the Billboard Charts. This hasn’t been done before since 2010, when Eminem released a song called “Love The Way You Lie,” featuring Rihanna. It was also the first time Kendrick Lamar got #1 with a song by him on the Billboard Charts. This feat demonstrates how far rap has grown, from its conception in the late ‘70’s to early 80’s, to the (somewhat) mainstream appeal of today’s music. This was due in large part to artists like Tupac, N.W.A., The Notorious B.I.G., Nas, and more. A lot of people claim that it was the best era for rap (I slightly disagree, though). However, we’ll be looking at a very important song from this decade that is very iconic: “Nuthin’ But A ‘G’ Thang” by Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg. This song put rap in the minds of the masses and established Snoop Dogg as a quality artist. It also introduced rap to a lot of people that didn’t listen to it before.
