The aging population is commonly thought to be plagued with low back pain, but it is not ordinarily associated with the younger population. However, recent studies have shown that adolescents who compete in the sport of rowing have a very high prevalence of back pain starting at a much younger age. Crew is a very physically demanding and taxing sport requiring repeated motions for extended periods of time, which tends to cause increased stress to the body, especially the lower back region. With a high incidence of low back pain in this specific population, it is evident that there needs to be measures put in place from an early age to prevent damage down the road. The utilization of evidence-based stretching and core strengthening exercises are vital in spinal health and longevity. However, the most important role of the core is its role in stabilization and maintaining a neutral spinal alignment. With imbalances in the anterior and posterior musculature, there is risk of improper orientation of the thoracic and lumbar spinal segments which increase risk of injury. Weakness or poor control of the rectus abdominus can lead to increased lumbar lordosis which is the angle or curvature if the lower region of the spine.
