Eric Schlosser - Fat Food Nation Eric Schlosser begins "Global Realization" with a visit to Plauen, which he writes, "has been alternately punished, rewarded, devastated, and transformed by the great unifying system of the twentieth century... Plauen has been a battlefield for these competing ideologies, with their proudly displayed and archetypal symbols: the smokestack, the swastika, the hammer and sickle, the golden arches. " What are the "competeing ideologies" to which Schlosser refers? What do the "archetypal symbols" he mentions represent? Each person learns to develop their own distinct set of beliefs based on the fact that they have their own subjective reality.
1. Journalists role within the coverage of media has changed drastically between Timothy Crouse’s Boys on the Bus, to the 1980’s when this show was produced. The forever evolving technologies of the media may make it hard to stay competitive in the news market. Do you think that the medias technology that was used plateaued around the Vietnam War until the early 2000’s?
There are more ways to shun obesity. Michael Pollan, who wrote “Escape from the western diet”, claims that the fast food industry are one of the main reasons why the people struggle with their health. He believes that the processed food we consume gives us harmful deceases. Pollan urges us to listen to his words to avoid the “Western diet”, he preaches that this is main cause of obesity, yet he does not give concrete information. I disagree with Pollan’s view that the food industry is the main cause of our health problems because although Pollan gives us great arguments he does not dive in into greater detail.
Some have similar to others, but the majority make their own decisions. You cannot classify or put a nation of people in a box, and have a legitimate claim. To say that “We do not discuss healthy habits or limitations”, without proper facts and statistics is absurd and would definitely make that an opinion statement. If Maxfield was to actually go out and take a poll on how many people either eat healthy or select unhealthy foods, then to have it published that would aid her claim significantly. While it is true that Americans are either overweight or obese, it does not and cannot define us all, as an
Not only eating unhealthy but over eating healthy food will make people obese as well. I’m not saying that fast food industry doesn’t have any role in making people fat, but they are not the only cause of obesity. I’m not agree with the author of “Childhood Obesity is Everyone's Problem” as well because he only shows junk food in the picture with a obese girl. The picture says that only junk food makes people obese, but it is not
In the reading In Defense of Food by Michael Pollan and The Simple Life In A Nutshell (Biologic Living) by Dr. J.H. Kellogg, they both dig deep into the past to try and explain to us the readers what we should and should not be putting into our bodies, how to make the most of these foods, creating a sound body and mind, although they have the same goals they have vastly different ways of achieving these goals . “The doctor in the future will give no medicines, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the causes and prevention of disease.” –Thomas Edison. Both Pollan and Kellogg believe that the foods we eat are directly in correlation with the diseases most common to us. Pollan points out that we live off a Western Diet, high in saturated fats, red meats.
A different quote in this article states “The news media is extremely powerful, and that it can inject particular points of view into its audience. At the other extreme, scholars have contended that the media has minimal effects on individuals because of various mediating conditions, including their selective exposure to media they find congenial to their views, selective perception in accordance with preexisting
As Woolston (2015) clearly conveyed, “Fatty, unbalanced, and oversized: That, in a nutshell, is the American diet.” With an escalation in fast food restaurants numbers, health food prices, and portion sizes, the typical American diet relics as a death sentence, encompassing fat, cholesterol, and sodium filled meals. Americans typically consume food that occurs quick and inexpensive, not comprehending the effect that this food deposits on their health. Apprehending the impact that the American diet places on health, the “Dietary Guidelines for Americans" serves as a guideline to help Americans rid of their old habits, reaching towards a healthy diet and weight.
Journalism today has much more appeal to emotions; it's not longer just the facts, and propaganda is used much more frequently in today's
“Michael Pollan’s ‘ The Consumer- A Republic of Fat analysis” Michael Pollan is an established writer who has, in fact, won many awards. He has written several books, including The Omnivore’s Dilemma (2006), as well as, In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto (2008).
Although high fructose corn syrup may be a contributor to obesity, it is not the main cause. H.F.C.S. may not be the culprit, overeating is one of the most crucial factors of obesity. Most Americans eat portions that are beyond healthy. Studies show that over the last twenty years, food portions in American’s restaurants have doubled or even tripled. This distorted the amount of food people think is healthy for them at home and when eating out.
Also not enough fruits and vegetables are consumed. The foods being eaten have been altered with antibiotics and chemicals. Obesity has become an epidemic, where 36% of the population is considered

The media will pick and choose which topics to discuss according to the viewer’s ratings. The news media represent the news in a manner that will leave people coming back for more. They choose carefully what they want to report and by doing so they do not spread lies within the articles but what they choose not to tell the audience. The media shares what the people
