Drinking alcohol is a universal tradition that has been celebrated and fought over. It was discovered before recorded history and has been drank since. Liquor is a connection between countries, cultures, and generations that will never be lost. An individual’s right to drink alcohol should be balanced with the rights of an adult. The legal age of consuming alcohol in the US is 21 and has been since the 1980’s. Students that graduate high school to go on to college turn the legal age of adulthood within those few years. Many researchers claim that lives are saved by the drinking age being so high, but then the number is much higher for lives lost when an adult turns the legal age, the fatalities have been postponed not saved. The cost of being an adult is much more than the cost of being a child or teen; they pay for their rights but for the first three years they are not given their full rights. According to law, young adults under 21 can make decisions for themselves, but they are immature enough they should not drink alcohol. The US is one of four nations worldwide with a drinking age as high as 21. Out of the 138 countries US has the highest age before the few countries that consider drinking illegal. Ninety percent of the countries have a legal drinking age of 19 and under including almost a third having no age limit. In the US alone, The US gave the right to choose a legal age for drinking to each state, most likely the only reason why most have not decreased is because a percentage of federal highway funding will be held from any state that chooses an age below 21. There are 29 states underage drinking is allowed if done on private premises with consent of a parent. Half the states allows underage drinking for religious purposes and a fifth for educational purposes. There are only five states that have no exceptions to the underage
