Loyalty and relationships are like plants -- they both require commitment and nurturing in order to grow. When a relationship is uncared for and loyalty is broken, the relationship eventually dies and wears out, much like when a plant is neglected. In Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, loyalty is displayed when individuals are faithful to each other thus their actions will be rewarded. However, those who are false-hearted will be punished or castigated. Penelope and Odysseus’ mutual devotion throughout their twenty-year separation conveys that those who remain committed to one another will be glorified. Meanwhile, those who commit deceitful actions demonstrated by Odysseus’ ship crew and his maids reveal that those who choose to be unfaithful will be punished. Odysseus and Penelope’s strong love and fidelity to one another, even after Odysseus’ long absence, demonstrates that faithfulness will lead to being awarded. Penelope had many chances to remarry while her husband was gone and seemingly lost at sea. She, however, rejected many of the offers given to her by the suitors and remained devoted to her husband or at least, his husband’s memory. Penelope and Odysseus are two constant spouses who have shown their devotion multiple times with Penelope’s weaving plan in order to keep rejecting suitors and Odysseus being true to his heart to Penelope even with many obstacles that stood in his path. Their faithfulness conveys that if a person is loyal, they will be rewarded since they were reunited eventually. On the other hand, Odysseus crew mates and maids deceit and disloyalty resulted to their death and punishment.
