Examine how far George and Lennie are loyal to each other throughout 'Of mice and men' In the novella 'Of Mice and Men', by the well-known author, John Steinbeck, the reader is introduced to a varied range of different characters on the ranch; within this realm loyalty between George and Lennie plays a significant role in the lonely itinerant lifestyle. The characters in this short novel act in a world of their own, having no connections to any other type of society; through this Steinbeck can strongly depict the theme of loyalty and friendship in dire situations during this period of time. During the 1930's, at the ranch, a predominant role of intelligent white-males is seen to retain power over lesser groups of people, of which Lennie is portrayed to be this part as he is mentally disabled. Despite this George and Lennie strike up a friendship of loyalty: showing firm and constant support. ' Guys like us got no fambly...they ain't got nobody in the worl' that gives a hoot in hell about 'em' sums up the reason why their loyalty and companionship is so vital and special to each other.
When people think of being loyal they think of their best friend or family however people can be loyal to those they just met. Of Mice and Men is a novel set in Great Depression in Salinas Valley California and is written by John Steinbeck. He wrote, 27 fiction and non-fiction novels in his lifetime. Of Mice and Men is set in a span of three days and follows George Milton and Lennie Smalls as they try to avoid trouble and save enough money to buy a ranch of their own but ultimately fail leaving Lennie dead by George’s hand. Candy is an old swamper that works on the ranch and is considered outsider to all the others because he is old and missing his hand.
Trust Issues Life if full of tough choices and nothing makes the decisions easier. The worst decisions are the ones that acquires personal ties to people. After a person makes the decision then as a result they will have to deal with the tormenting thoughts and the constant questions of what if. In 1937 John Steinbeck wrote “Of Men and Mice” about Lennie and George two migrant workers who find themselves in a difficult situation when Lennie accidentally kills a woman.
Jealously, like how it is shown in the video, is evident within Crooks. Although it is not blatantly said that Crooks is jealous, we can assume he is from his words and actions. For example, on page 68, Crooks goes on to say that he isn’t allowed in the bunkhouse since he is black, then later on, on page 74, he goes on about how, someone can go crazy if they have no one to talk to, and that too much loneliness will make you sick. From these two examples, we can see that Crook’s is jealous of the other farm workers and on a more specific level, George and Lennie.

Well, it's safe to say that all of us have experienced a situation similar to one of these in which we have to make a decision between 2 appealing choices. This conflict is named internal conflict because it occurs when people fight themselves. Throughout John Steinbeck’s, Of Mice and Men, George Milton endures an internal conflict when having to decide between looking after his friend, Lennie Smalls, or maintaining a job. Lennie constantly puts their jobs at risk through his uncontrollable behavior.
In “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck is writing about loyalty and friendship. George was very loyal to Lennie even after all of Lennies scandalous acts, Curley had wanted to make sure that his wife is safe, and another example would be that Candy’s dog was Cany’s best friend. Although Lennie and George had their differences, their friendship and loyalty towards each other shines throughout the story. Lennie had said “You said I was your cousin!” and George had replied with “That was a lie.
Within the novella Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, characters have trouble forming meaningful relationships, which cause them to live lonely lives because of their own insecurities, society, or because of someone else and events in one's past. To start off, Curley struggles to bond with the men in the bunkhouse, and his own wife. Being a good friend to someone means that you support them, have their back, and are able to have a good time with them. However, he has trouble following those guidelines because he is blinded by his own jealousness and desires. He continually tries to intimidate any individual that he is threatened by.
In “Of Mice and Men”, Steinbeck explores the value of a man through their social standing, how they treat others and their idea of companionship. Steinbeck presents that in his world, a majority of men value usefulness over friendship and companionship such as the bond between Candy and his dog. Candy’s dog is “ancient” and “can’t eat, can’t see, can’t even walk without hurtin’’. Carlson and the rest of the men in the barn decide it is best to “shoot him right in the back of the head”, while Candy argues he doesn’t want to as “I had him from a pup” and doesn’t want to take his life away. After much convincing, Candy’s dog is shot, to the dismay of Candy who has lost his companion, as he “continued to stare at the ceiling”.
As kids, we were taught that selflessness seems to be the recurring characteristic in “heroes,” while selfishness is associated with the “villains.”. Such archetypes make it seem like people have to give everything to others to succeed. John Steinbeck’s, Of Mice and Men, shows how putting others who harm personal success before themselves or their passions, can inevitably lead to their downfall. Steinbeck shows George’s tragic and heroic downfall through his tone as it changes toward Lennie, and George’s character development throughout the novella. Although, selflessness and loyalty are important heroic qualities that we owe to society as just individuals.
Although friendship and loyalty are major features in the novel Of Mice and Men love is the key to all traits. Without love all those major features would fail, fall apart. At the end George has no other option to kill Lennie. But George truly loves Lennie, he shoots Lennie painlessly in the back of the head. Lennie dies with a happy thought of a dream of the farm they want to own someday.

In Of Mice and Men by John Steinback, Lennie and George are friends in a world of poverty and must rely on each other to survive. In this environment, with people using one another for profit and survival during the Great Depression, can truly selfless friendships still exist? Truly selfless friendships, when defined as being selfless towards your partner 100% of the time, do not exist because people always desire something from their partners, whether it be love or pleasure.
To begin, What is the true meaning of friendship? I believe that in order to establish a true friendship we should be loyal, true, and understanding. When people are in a friendship they should be able to feel comfortable talking to each other when they are at their worst. A friendship should also consist of being able to help a friend when they are in need of help.
Friendship is a big and important part of human life. In this story there isn’t a lot of friendship, which is obvious because, in the book Of Mice and Men By: John Steinbeck, the other men were surprised to find out that George and Lennie even traveled together. But George and Lennie’s friendship, as John Steinbeck shows, is valuable, especially to Lennie, to have someone to go to, talk to, and help him out. Having friendship helps us out in many different ways, such as encouraging each other and sacrificing for each other. An example is when George would encourage Lennie to keep out of trouble saying, ”An’ you ain’t gonna do no bad things like you done in Weed, neither.”
How can friendship be defined by one concept with the knowledge of different perspectives. The common definition of friendship is a relationship with two people who are friends. My definition of friendship is the bond between two people form based on trust, respect, and loyalty towards each other. The characters in the story “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck are examples of this word. The two main characters George and Lennie have a friendship that has both its peaks and valleys.
