Loyalty In William Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

Imagine falling in love with someone that you just met and ended giving up your life for them. Well, that’s exactly what happened in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet fell in love, but their families are in a feud, so they couldn’t be together, and because of this, they did everything in secret, even their marriage. Since no one knew of them being married, someone else proposed marriage to Juliet, and she didn’t want to accept since she was with Romeo. They tried to overcome their problems, but in the end, they both ended up dying. One of Shakespeare’s major topics in this play is loyalty. Since Juliet was small, the Nurse has taken care of her, and of course the nurse wants the best for Juliet. The Nurse was one of the few people that knew of Romeo and Juliet's romance, and she never told Juliet's parents when she could have told them. When Shakespeare writes, “There stays a husband to make you a wife” (2.5.74) it is clear that the nurse helps out Juliet by assisting in seeing Romeo and help them both out so that they can marry each other. Even though in the end it was not the best thing for Juliet, the Nurse has a love for Juliet showing her faithfulness, making shakespeare’s theme of willing to do anything is not always going to end up the best way. Another way the nurse shows undying loyalty is she will do anything. Shakespeare makes his view of willingness to do anything clear in the Nurse’s dialogue: “Revive, look up, or I will die with thee” (4.5.25) the implication of this statement is that the Nurse is actually willing to leave this world just because Juliet is on her deathbed. An obstacle between them was that they could not see each, then Romeo was banished, and the result was someone else proposing to Juliet. No one knew that Romeo and Juliet were married, except the Friar and Nurse, and Juliet did not want to accept the proposal. Shakespeare writes, “And I will do it without fear or doubt” (4.1.89), this is clear that Juliet did not want to marry anyone but Romeo, and that she was prepared to sacrifice her life. I drink to thee.” (4.3.59) this shows the fact of Juliet taking a risk, and that shows how loyal they are to each other. She took a risk of faking her death just to avoid marrying someone else. In addition, when Shakespeare writes,“Thy drugs are quick. Thus with a kiss I die”(5.3.120), it is clear, he is demonstrating sacrifice and that for Romeo the outcome is he dies since he was true to Juliet. This clearly shows it was not the best route that they gave up their own lives for each other.
