We Were Soldiers Once. And Young is a great book written by Lt. General Harold Moore and Joseph Galloway. Moore and Galloway wrote this book to show the bravery of the young soldiers who fought and died in The Battle of La Drang and to make sure that their sacrifice is never forgotten. Moore attended West Point, where he graduated first in his class. He served in the Vietnam War as a United States general, where he fought in the Battle of Ia Drang. Galloway, a civilian, chose to travel to Vietnam to take pictures, document and report on the Battle as a War Correspondent. Their goal was achieved when you read about what the soldiers endured during those four brutal days. It allows you to appreciate anyone who serves their country, especially those who lay down their lives. An example of this is, “Then I got hit in the neck and the bullet went right through. Now I couldn’t talk or make a sound. I got up and tried to take charge and was shot a third time. That one blew up my right leg and put me down.” I think this quote from the book perfectly shows the resilience and courage of the American soldiers during the battle. It took multiple gun shots, one to his neck and one that blew his leg off, to finally put this one American soldier down. He only stopped when he physically could not move anymore. Another quote that proves the authors’ thesis is, “I thought a guy snuck up behind me and hit me with the butt of his weapon, it was such a blow. Wasn’t anybody there, it was a bullet from the side or rear. I put the bandage on it and the helmet helped hold it.” Getting shot in the head didn’t even stop this soldier. He just put a bandage on it and continued fighting. It shows just how devoted the soldiers were in their fight with their brothers in battle and in doing whatever they were called on to do for their
