In Lucy Grealy’s Autobiography of a Face, there are many literary symbols that help to convey the author’s overall theme of confidence and physical beauty in today’s society. The story is about a young woman who undergoes multiple surgeries in order to become healthy again. In the meantime, the chemotherapy and radiation cause her hair to fall out and surgeries have some of her jaw removed. Unfortunately, this takes a lot more than just physical appearance away from Lucy. This is a key component to one of the major signs in the novel.

Bram Stoker plays with these anxieties revolving around female sexuality – he follows the gothic tradition of innocent damsel in distress against looming evil. Winter can be a time of snow mans and hot chocolate or a period of sadness, mystery, guilt, and regret. Alice Walker’s last sentence of her beautiful story, “The Flowers,” states, “And the summer was over,” which is a symbolic explanation that after every happy moment of euphoria comes a time of sadness and sorrow.
Society can be seen as giving a woman a template of how they must act, taking away a lot of their freedoms. Dracula can be seen as “society”, or the outside force causing Lucy to become this way. Lucy is not really given a choice since she doesn’t have any parental figures in her life. She is altered by Dracula and her husband Arthur, two men, which can be mimicking the influence or control men have over women during this time
The most turbulent and liberating moment of life is the moment one ‘leaves the nest’. Jamaica Kincaid’s Lucy paints the troubled narrative of a young woman finding a new life in America and wrestling with the roles society has placed upon her. Lucy remarks that “on their way to freedom, some people find riches, some people find death” (Kincaid, 129). Lucy’s battle leads her down a road of riches of newfound independence, however, she ultimately finds herself in desolation.
