Lucy Stone's Importance in the U.S. Suffrage Movement. Avery Charles HH216: The West in the Modern World September 9, 2024. Lucy Stone single-handedly paved the way for the Women's Suffrage movement in the United States. This movement, lasting over a century, was a social and political campaign geared toward fighting for women’s rights and promoting gender equality. The two main victories that resulted from the suffrage movement were the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the global impact it had on women’s rights. It was also well before any other speeches from other key figures in the suffrage movement. Less than five years later, in 1850, she led the initiative for the first National Woman’s Rights Convention in hopes of establishing a formal movement. There were influential people at this convention, such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, but Lucy Stone took action and planted the seed for this event. Not only did she create the idea for the first national convention, but she played a key role in arranging the first eight of them. Her vital role in the suffrage movement is not to be overlooked. Elizabeth Cady Stanton took this to heart and even gave credit to her by stating, “Lucy Stone was the first speaker who really stirred the nation's heart on the subject of woman's wrongs.” Many people believe Elizabeth Cady Stanton was the most important person in the suffrage movement, but even she gave credit to Lucy Stone.
