Ludwig Van Beethoven Joey Johnson Music Composer 4-24-15 Ludwig Van Beethoven Ludwig Van Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn, Germany. One day later, he was baptized. Music ran in his family. His grandfather, Lodewijk van Beethoven was a musician from Mechelen, Belguim. Out of his six siblings, only his he and his two younger brothers made it to adulthood. Beethoven’s first teacher happened to be his father. Beethoven’s talent was obvious. His father, Johann, tried to make Beethoven look like a prodigy, he claimed Ludwig was a year younger than he actually was. After 1779, Ludwig met his most valuable mentor, Christian Gottlob Neefe. It isn’t known whether they ever met. When he was in Vienna, Ludwig composed many works, although none of them were published. Ludwig returned upon hearing that his mother was ill, and shortly after, she died. Ludwig had to take care of his family after this death, because his father had succumbed to alcoholism. For five years he did this. As he grew, he became known as one of the most important young composers, behind Haydn and Mozart. He continued composing lots of music in his early adult years. For his First Symphony, Ludwig hired the Burgtheater on April 2, 1800. He staged a program including pieces from Haydn and Mozart, as well as his Septet. At the age of 26, Ludwig began to lose his hearing. He was diagnosed with a severe case of tinnitus, which can be described as a ringing in the ears that drowns out other sounds. Because of this he evaded talking to people as much as he could. This might be why we don’t know much about Ludwig’s life. Ludwig’s deafness may be linked to tinnitus but it didn’t cause it. Some say that his habit of submerging his head into cold water to stay awake caused this, others say that auto-immune disorders is how he lost his hearing.
