History:
The book of Luke is in the New Testament of the Bible. The author of Luke was a well educated physician. He was a companion of a missionary named Paul. This book was written between the 60’s and 80’s A.D. The author’s name does not appear in this book but it is assumed that Luke is the author. He talks about Jesus being the Messiah and lets people know that Jesus’ life, death and resurrection makes salvation to all people. The place it was written is not clear, but possible destinations are Rome, Achaia, Ephesus and Caesarea. In this paper, we will learn about the birth of John the Baptist in Luke 1. Herod was the king of Judea and Zechariah was a priest. He was married to Elizabeth. They prayed for years for a child however, they were not able to have a child and now both were very old. Once as they burned incense and prayed in the temple an angel appeared. Zechariah was scared when he saw the angel. “But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will have a boy and you are to call him John”. Zechariah doubted his word and wanted to know how he could be sure this is going to happen. He was doubtful because of their old age, however he should not have doubted him because he was a priest and he knew about the history of Sarah. The angel explained that he was sent there in the presence of the lord and because he doubted him, he would remain silent and not be able to talk until a chosen time. Zechariah returned home and Elizabeth became pregnant. When she was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabrielle to a virgin named Mary. He explained to her that she would give birth to a son and he would be called Jesus. She was concerned how this would happen because she was a virgin. Gabrielle explained to her that her cousin Elizabeth will also have a baby in her old age and she is already six months along in her pregnancy.
