The Lunchbox is a beautiful and genuinely moving tale about love between two strangers. The film is a heartwarming and realistic depiction of love while being underlined with a theme of loneliness.

Set in Mumbai, The Lunchbox is a film written and directed by Ritesh Batra about an unhappy housewife, Ila (Nimrat Kaur) who sends lunch to her husband by way of Mumbai’s efficient lunchbox delivery system. However, on day the lunchbox get delivered to a lonely widower, Saajan (Irrfan Khan). Curious to find out more, Ila decides to write a letter to Saajan which she places into the lunchbox. Hence, igniting a series of letters passed back and forth between the two unlikely strangers which eventually grows into love.

The film was heartwarming and delightful as you start to identify with the characters and root for them to be together. The cinematography and filming of the movie not only accurately captured the bustling city of Mumbai but also helped audiences feel as if they are with the characters. The idea of the film derived from debutant director Ritesh Batra wanting to do a documentary on the famous Mumbai lunchbox delivery system – Dabbawala. However after hearing many interesting and personal stories about it, he decided to create this film. The filming is simple yet masterful an always directs your attention to the focal point of each scene. The characters in the film are easily identifiable.
