The book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park explores the life of Salva, an 11-year-old boy living in South Sudan, after he is displaced by the Sudanese Civil War. First, in 1985, Salva and his classmates are instructed to run into the bush to escape the gunfire that was heard not far from the school. Then, he joins a group of travelers who are walking away from the war in Sudan, but they abandon him in a barn one evening while he is still asleep. After spending a few days with the barn's owner, Salva is sent away with a different group of travelers, must of whom accept him grudgingly. The group walks for a month toward Ethiopia, and eventually they arrive to the Itang refugee camp in Ethiopia.

Isabel is sold to Elihu and Ann Lockton, along with her five year old sister Ruth, after her original owner dies. The girls are shipped to the house and Ann Lockton, who demands to be called Madam Lockton, is terrible to them. She beats the girls and constantly yells at them. After this, Madam Lockton sells Ruth, making Isabel mad.

Hardships Salva faced in Southern Sudan are lack of water/ food, the wild animals, and the fighting/ war. One of the hardships Salva had to face in Southern Sudan is lack of water and food. In chapters 3-4 Salva had gotten water from a woman older than Salva’s mother that he had met after he was left alone, the woman gave Salva a gourd of water and a bag of raw peanuts.

The story Chains, by Laurie Halse Anderson takes place in New York during the year 1777 where the main character, Isabel, an African-American slave is fighting for her and her younger sisters freedom during the American Revolutionary War. The theme developed throughout Chains is perseverance and courage. In Chains the protagonist is Isabel, a thirteen year old girl, who was enslaved in Rhode Island.
Although often used interchangeably, disease and illness differ fundamentally in their meanings and implications. Disease is the commonly thought of concept in which a person suffers due to a physiological or psychological ailment, while illness refers to a culmination of physical, emotional and social suffering of a person. Disease is perceived as the phenomena that affects an organism, while illness affects not only the patient but also their loved ones and community. This distinction is vividly apparent in The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, in which Anne Fadiman relays the approaches to a Hmong child named Lia’s epilepsy by her family and her doctors as well as the tumultuous interaction between these caregivers. Most of the people who experienced this were POWs (Prisoners of War). What these POWs endured was invisibility which means in a literal sense that they were isolated or “cut off” from each other and/or society, and in a figurative sense they lost their dignity. A story of one of these POWs is of Louie Zamperini. Louie enlisted in the war on the Western Front, and he got captured during battle.

This is one of the themes explored in the memoir, Night by Eliezer Wiesel, which tells of the horrific experiences he went through as a Jew during the Holocaust. He does this by sharing his struggles Wiesel hopes to encourage his audience by recounting the lessons he learned during the darkest days of his life to avoid being bystanders by observing, speaking out, and not conforming. When a person is observant they are able to sense changes in advance even when based on the most minute of details.

When someone’s story isn't public knowledge, the public tends to make up their story for them. In the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, Zora Neale Hurston uses third-person narration to demonstrate Janie’s story being told in a way of which she is not in control. By giving her story to Pheoby, Janie hopes to suppress the gossip and assumptions that have been made about her in order to earn her place in society. The role of storytelling demonstrates the necessity of a woman’s story in being part of a community.
The poem “ Sick” by Shel Silverstein is my favorite children's poem. This piece is told from a perspective of a young child who is unenthusiastic and reluctant to going to school. The child uses a list of wild ailments to justify her inability of attending school that day. However, at the end of the poem once he lists everything from chickenpox to a shrunken brain, the child is told that the day is Saturday. At this point, all of the illness and afflictions mystically disappear and he goes out to play.
