In the early days of the new republic the way families functioned started to change. In different passages of advice literature both positive and negative behaviors were empathized. For example, in Lydia Maria Childs passage she mentions the importance of knowledge and how it is essential to a prosperous life. She mentions that anything we add to our knowledge makes us more useful. This is a positive because it is showing mothers if they teach their children they will be better equipped at accomplishing different tasks. The children would be able to help out with household duties. If they have knowledge the children would be able to grow up to teach their own kids without the expense of paying a professional teacher. In the New England Primer
