In the book Fish in a Tree by Lynda Mullaly Hunt and the short story “All Summer in a Day” by Ray Bradbury, people who take things too far can turn a crowd into a mob. Ray Bradbury develops this by the classmates hurting Margot and shoving her in a closet. On the other hand, Lynda Mullaly Hunt develops this by showing how Ally breaks down after she can’t take being bullied anymore.

When Ally isn’t paying attention to what she’s supposed to be doing in class Shay does this, “Shay has gotten up to look. She laughs and says, ‘The world gets dumber every time Ally Nickerson speaks.‘ ” (7). This shows that Shay makes fun of Ally for something she can’t help. It also states in the book when Jessica and Shay laugh, “I should be used to this, but it still takes a piece of me every time. As Shay and Jessica laugh...” (7). This shows that Shay and her friend Jessica bullies Ally and this happens a lot. It always affects Ally, but only a little. Right now it seems like normal bullies making fun of their victim but later it the book it gets even worse. When Ally’s class is on a field trip to a museum, Ally sees this, “I hear giggling. Shay is showing her slate to a bunch of other kids. There’s a head wearing a dunce hat and ‘Ally’ is written underneath.” (154). This shows that Shay drew a picture of Ally wearing a dunce which is very mean. Shay is again making fun of something Ally can’t help. This is where the crowd starts to turn into a mob because mostly everyone in her class is laughing at her. It also states when Shay is outside crying because of what Shay did, “I lean my cheek against the cool chain, feeling like I can’t reach anything anymore. Then the tears come.” This shows that Ally couldn’t take being made fun of anymore especially since this way worse so she broke down on the swingset. Shay went too far this time it doesn’t realize how much it hurts to be make fun of just because you can’t read. She turned the crowd of her classmates into a mob.
