o The history of the Cold War influences US government decisions in Vietnam by wanting to stop communist expansionism. According to Johnson, US were supporting South Vietnam against internal and external communist threats. Therefore, he president used the resolutions as authority to wage war in Vietnam (US Congress2) and US forces in Vietnam to defend the freedom of South Vietnam and by extension democracy around the world, against communist aggression (US Congress 3). While reading the article, before the “attacks” from the North Vietnamese and the Gulf of Tonkin, the president and congress did not had the reason to get involved in Vietnam War.
The Gulf of Tonkin resolution provided the justification for further U.S. escalation of the conflict in Vietnam. The Gulf of Tonkin did not provided the justification to be part of the war. Not only that it was against the president’s campaign that he promised to Americans. No single man should have the unlimited powers to make decision that would affect everyone in America.
