The production of the play, A Midsummer’s Night Dream by William Shakespeare, at Towson University left me pleasantly surprised. This was the first time I saw the play, but the manner in which the actors played their role allowed me to easily follow the plot. The actors that effectively enacted their role in my opinion were Puck and Helena. The whole play had an air of comedy, but Puck’s movement across the stage and manner of speaking allowed him to completely transform into Puck. His acting had purpose and he made that clear to the audience every time he was on stage. The actress that played Helena did an amazing job in becoming Helena. The language in the play itself is hard to understand, especially for those who have never been exposed to Shakespeare. However, Helena’s interpretation of the character made it clear to understand based on her facial expressions, movements, and gestures. The actor who played Lysander did well in enacting his role as well, especially when he became victim to the powers of magic. Lysander showed a quick and comedic transition from being in love with Hermia to Helena. I saw this point as a transformation for Lysander’s character in the play. The actor had not really caught my attention before this plot twist; I was lacking something from his character. Despite this, the actor caught my eye when he woke up and fell for Helena because he was motivated to have her and I felt purpose to his acting. So, this quick transition of love created a great dynamic between Lysander and Helena. Helena’s confusion and disdain to his actions were enjoyable. She ran away, raised her voice, and questioned him because just a few moments ago no one wanted her.
