Among the countless similarities and differences between the two plays we have studied, Lysistrata and Antigone, the most important difference is how both female characters were treated. In other words, the plays contrasted individualism vs collective activism. In Lysistrata, the heroine successfully accomplished her goal of getting the men to stop the war with the support of the other women. In contrast, Antigone was unable to win her fight. She had no ones support, including her sisters, which ultimately led to her death. This is the most important difference because it affected the whole outcome of the play. It also was important because it led to a conversation between the Athenians, since it portrayed possible controversial “problems” with the Athenian culture.

This is because one character had support, while the other didn’t. In Antigone, Antigone begins the play talking about how cursed her sister and her are from her father, Oedipus, and mothers mistake. She states, “Dear Ismene,my own blood sister, do you have any senses of all of the trouble Zeus keeps bringing on the two of us, …. which stems from Oedipus?” , which talks about how her father and mothers mistake has brought them misfortune too many times. She asks Ismene if she has heard about what has happened, and Ismene has no clue what she is talking about. Antigone tells her that Creon has decided to honor one of her brothers with a full funeral and burial, but the other disgracefully. She is very upset over her brother, Polyneicies, that she loves dearly not getting a proper burial, which is disobeying the gods and their religion. She then calls upon Ismene to take action, stateing “ Now you know,..splendid ancestry.” because Creon announces
