Are we being watched? Is there an all knowing being up there? People have struggled with the concept of not knowing if god exists or not. M. Night Shyamalan uses his film signs to entertain people with a movie about an alien invasion, but to also give clues and uses literary elements to tell a story and prove a point. In the movie Shyamalan uses symbolism, flashback, and character to reveal his theme of A man regaining his faith. One of the ways Shyamalan reveals his theme is with the use of symbolism. An example of this is the book Morgan buys on aliens. In the film Morgan and the family use the book as a guide to learn more about the aliens and guide them through the invasion. In real life Christians use the bible as a guide through life and seeking spiritual enlightenment. Another way is with the glasses of water. In the movie Graham has multiple flashbacks of the night his wife died at different time throughout the film. During the film one can come to a conclusion that Graham has these flashbacks whenever something goes terribly wrong. The first flashback they only showed him arriving at the scene of the accident in his minister robe where one can argue that he felt that God would protect him from what he was about to hear. In the second one it shows his conversation with the officer where she is telling him that that is the last conversation he will have with his wife. The final flashback shows his wife and his whole conversation where the wife tells Graham to tell Merrill to swing away and to tell Graham to see. These flashbacks play an important role in the development of the conflict and story. With the information the wife tells Graham he was able to see the signs and Merrill was able to defeat the
