The civil rights leaders used the “trickster hero” tactics by using the silence to be powerful. They used their silence to make it peaceful and they gainsay to fighting back because of their reputaion. King was an incredible individual and helped many African Americans receive their equality they rightfully deserved. King achieved this through speeches, on being his famous “I have a dream” which he said in front of thousands on August 28th 1963 at the Lincoln memorial in Washington D.C. He also wrote the letter from Birmingham jail when he was arrested in Alabama on April 16th 1963, which put an end to fallacies said by eight Alabama clergymen.
Martin Luther King Biography Martin Luther King was born on January 15.1929, in Atlanta (Georgia). He was a Baptist minister who led the Civil Rights movement in United States, from 1950 until his death by assassination in 1968. He also played a pivotal role in ending the legal segregation of African-American in the south and other areas of the nation. He received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and also he was one of the most lauded African-American leaders in history. In 1954 he became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist church in Alabama.

He was actually born with the name Michael, but changed it when he was older. MLK, Jr. came from a long line of pastors, and after graduating with his doctorate, he took over at a church in Montgomery, Alabama. King was happily married with two daughters and two sons.

So much so that people who public displays of religion would make him uncomfortable. This temporarily influenced his decision to not follow in his father’s footsteps and enter the ministry. It wasn’t until his junior year at college that he took a bible class, which renewed his faith and, to his fathers delight, finally saw a career in ministry. After graduating from Moorhouse College in 1948, Mlk went on to attend the liberal Crozer Theological Seminary. While there he excelled academically and became valedictorian of his class.

In early April of 1963, Dr. King was arrested for participating in a march with no permit from the city officials in Birmingham, Alabama. Later, while he was in jail King wrote a letter in response to a letter in the local newspaper written by a couple of clergymen that had scorned his protests and marches because they believed that they were unwise and untimely. Within his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” he voices his reasons and ideas as to why he did what he did.
MLK started his movement in 1955 by boycotting riding the Montgomery buses that other African Americans also chose not to ride, which led the United States Supreme Court to declare segregated buses illegal (Herweck 2011). Also, MX founded the Organization of Afro-American Unity, where he spotted racism and his philosophy in June 1964, which had a great influence among the Student Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC) members (History.com Editors 2023). While they both devoted their lives to the movement, MX was more charismatic than MLK from the view that he was more of a realist, which means that he saw things the way they really are. Though he converted to Muslims, he said in his speech to keep the religion only in people's hearts and God for the moment because it hasn’t done anything good for people but caused an argument (John Fabiani 2015). He also said that racism is not just an American problem but a world problem, whereas MLK pointed out problems in the US.
MLK has an encouraging and patient tone, that illustrates his pathos, of being able to show his emotions in his words. In his letter, he states, “As in so many experiences of the past, we were confronted with blasted hopes, and the dark shadow of a deep disappointment settled upon us” (2). Shows that through many situations he has gone through, he has suffered through disappointment, and that many times he tries to be strong for himself and others. But there was always this shadow, that represented the rejection of the whites, being able to know that what they are doing is very wrong. In his life, he has always been told this, “For years now I have heard the word “wait.”

MLK’s overall purpose of his speech was to stress the need of equality in America, and how African Americans deserve that equality. First, once describing his vision of future America, he repeatedly uses the phrase “I have a dream” (King). MLK is expressing his intense longing and desire for such a change. Through this repetition, the audience is able to grasp how meaningful equality is to MLK. It is not just a need, or want, it is a dream.
