The Impact of MTV During The 1980’s
“I want my MTV'' this quote was said by almost everyone in the 1980s. It was a quote used to promote MTV and to get the channel on more TV’s throughout the world.
The 80s was a big time of change for music. It helped develop many ideas and helped popularize many things and MTV was one reason that influenced all of it. The 1980s was a decade characterized by new trends in the music industry and the rise of music videos which can be seen through MTVs impact on music, MTV’s popular artists, and Music Videos.

With all this talk about music videos, what actually are they? Music videos are small movies that have bands singing and dancing to their own songs. The format used a “video jockey” or a “vj” to announce and link the songs and videos: the style was disjointed and sometimes jarring both visually and aurally borrowing the style of television commercials–in effect MTV was one big commercial (Rollin). Music videos also helped the songs sell. Rock artists began producing videos at the same time they brought out the album, hiring the best photographers, costumers, choreographers and make-up artists to achieve the look that would sell the music (Rollin). The reason why videos grew so much in popularity is because there’s something powerful about visuals and imagery being combined with music, and visual storytelling quickly became an integral part of music creation (Vole). At first people didn't really think music videos were all that special but when the impact that music videos had on sales became clear, record companies started pouring dollars into production (“How MTV Changed the World | BFI”). MTV is the reason music videos are as popular as they are now and helped the artists because fans could actually see them instead of just listen to
