Comparison Book Vs Film The film “Macbeth” by roman Polanski is not alike the book “Macbeth“. The movie produced by Roman Polanski in 1979 does not follow the book version entirely. Parts of the characters’ actions in the film version are not spelled out in the print version of the play. Also some depictions of the scenes in the film are not well structured.
Compare and Contrast Macbeth and Film Act 1 scene 1: The 3 witches recited a spell or curse right away instead of starting with the first line in the play, “When shall we meet again..” (Shakespeare, 302). The second version we watched was less dramatic than the 1948 movie.
I enjoyed the movie better than the book. It included just the right amount of action scenes, description words, and details from the story. The story was amazing but I like seeing things more than reading them. I usually like the movies better than the book.
In most novel to film adaptations, directors will often change certain elements of the work for the movie to move at a different pace. These changes may range from the main character’s hair colour to larger transformations like an important character being left out. In the case of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth, the largest difference from the play to film was the role of Ross. In the film adaptation of Macbeth, Ross is a developed and crucial character to the plot. This is shown through his involvement in Macbeth’s schemes, relationship with Macbeth, and loyalty to power in Scotland.
Making a movie from direct content that is more than a hundred years old is easy because all the scenes and script is there for your use. Some directors like to make some drastic or minor changes based on their own interpretation of the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare. While watching both Goold (2010) and Polanski (1971), I have noticed a lot of major differences between the two movies and the original play Macbeth written by William Shakespeare. Some of the differences I have noticed is that is in Goold (2010), Macbeth actually comes to kill Lady Macduff and her children. Another difference in Goold (2010) is that the witches are shown throughout the film.
The setting of the movie is the first obvious difference that can be seen. The movie was set in New York City, New York in 2000 while the play was set in Elsinore, Denmark in the late middle ages. This greatly affects the way the movie is viewed because it is essentially an entirely different world. In the movie there are video cameras, cars, phones and skyscrapers, all things that obviously weren’t around during Shakespeare’s time. Even if the movie and the play had been based in the same year, the story still would have been slightly different.
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown” (H. P. Lovecraft). In Harper Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and Shakespeare’s Macbeth, many characters are shown to be primarily driven by this emotion. Characters such as Mayella Ewell in To Kill A Mockingbird or Malcolm and Donalbain in Macbeth are shown to act drastically because of fear. Actions such as Macbeth killing Banquo in fear of being exposed or Mayella accusing an innocent man, display how humans are primarily driven by fear.
The version of Macbeth Act 5 Scene 1 that was the most true to Shakespeare 's vision was the Kate Fleetwood version. The Kate Fleetwood version was more successful than the Judi Dench version due to the portrayal of Lady Macbeth and her downfall. In the Judi Dench version of Act 5 Scene 1 of Macbeth the tone is sad not crazy. As well as Lady Macbeth is portrayed as more sad than irrational/anxious and guilty.
Macbeth, one of William Shakespeare’s most famous plays, is a tragedy about one man rising to the top to subsequently fall. The Lion King is an animated Disney movie about a lion cub learning about life while on the run following his father’s death. From his innovative position, the most intriguing choice was the decision to cast Francesca Annis as Lady Macbeth. Traditionally, Lady Macbeth is an older figure in the story, and her power over Macbeth is that of a strong-willed wife. But, by casting a 26-year old physically attractive woman, Polanski is able to pervade Lady Macbeth and her machinations with an additional layer of seductiveness.
Filmed in 1998, the made for TV movie “Macbeth” tells the story of Shakespeare’s “Macbeth”. They take a more modern spin on the old play by keeping the story the same but, changing their outfits, the time frame as well as the scenes. The movie keeps close to the roots of the play by continuing to use the play's original script so the movie is spoken in old English. However; as it was filmed close to nineteen years ago the movie is quite outdated for 2017. Leaving me quite bored and, wishing for more at the end of the film.
