This quote exemplifies the concept that there are two sides to a person. Macbeth tells himself and Lady Macbeth to use a false face to hide what lies in the evil infested heart. As Macbeth continues to cave to his desires, he readily shows this immoral side. The greatest examples of this occur at the time that Macbeth kills Duncan and has Banquo and the Macduff family murdered. Macbeth decides to assassinate King Duncan due to a combination of Lady Macbeth’s suggestion and his own desires. In addition, Macbeth hired three murders to assassinate Banquo to protect his crown instead of sparing his previous best friend. He convinces the murderers by claiming that Banquo was the sole cause of their suffering. He continues and states that Banquo is also his enemy, but that doing the deed himself would be awkward. “Thou canst not say I did it: never shake Thy gory locks at me.” Macbeth (3.4.63-64) This shows that when deciding to have Banquo murdered, Macbeth suffered from inner conflicts that stopped him from believing in himself. Nonetheless, the Macbeths were not the only ones suffering from inner conflicts. Macduff was another character that had inner conflicts. Primarily, Macduff’s inner conflict revolved around his trip to England. In doing so, he would be leaving his family defenseless, but in turn, he would be able to fight against Macbeth.
