Shattered by guilt, with a burden so heavy, it overcame her, Lady Macbeth naively believed she could simply wash the shame off her hands. Her devastating words state, “What, will these hands ne’er be clean?”, as her mind is overflowing with the guilt that consumes her. The powerful Shakespearean play “Macbeth”, exhibits how immoral behavior can lead to a negative outcome. The two main characters, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth, go through a rollercoaster of a relationship after the sudden event of King Duncan’s murder. Her once confident, strong-minded nature developed into an anxious, uneasy mess. Her guilt for her husband’s actions has completely altered her fearless personality. She is feeling the repercussions of the stress she put Macbeth under when she initially pressured him to murder King Duncan. Macbeth is also a forceful character, but he reveals his weakness to his wife when he is fearful to pursue her requests. To fulfill Macbeth's role, this character would need to have a harsh and ambitious spirit, as well as the ability to reveal a soft gentle side to Macbeth's character. Lady Macbeth exhibits a bipolar personality. The character that would play for her would have to display her resilient, determined side while having the ability to contribute to Lady Macbeth's childlike character she reveals towards the end of the play. Both Macbeth and Lady Macbeth develop strange, disturbing personalities that lead to their downfall. So, visual aspects other than the characters themselves can help show the evolution of their identities. These elements support the overall themes of the characters in a modern conversion of Macbeth. Lastly, the final aspect of a play that brings the performance together is what the actors wear. A character’s costume can express pieces of their personality and reveal their intentions. Costumes are also a significant part of telling the story through visual effects. Lady Macbeth’s character is thoroughly evolving from a strong, driven woman, to a vulnerable, defenseless child.
