‘Macbeth is a victim of forces outside of his control.’ Do you agree?
Macbeth is a victim of forces outside of his control. Macbeth is a character whose choices impact that whole of the kingdom; however his choices are driven by fate and destiny. Macbeth is also the victim of Lady Macbeth and his thirst for power, which ultimately means that Macbeth is the victim of forces which are out of his control.
The events that ultimately lead to Macbeth’s death were inevitable. As shown by the witches prophecy Macbeth’s gain of power then ultimate demise were out of his control. They were destined to occur. Fate and destiny play an enormous part in Macbeth and it shows how Macbeth was not in control of his own destiny. The choices he made and the acitons he took were all leading to his death. Macbeth made his own choices which led to him being murdered. Although being manipulated by Lady Macbeth ultimately led to the decision, killing King Duncan was one decision that was made by Macbeth. Other choices such as killing Banquo’s family and other innocent people were choices made by Macbeth when he was flooded with power, because of his greed to hold onto this power. Although it is then arguable that Macbeth made the choices which ultimately led to Banquo’s murder and therefore were not controlled by outside forces, it can be argued that Macbeth was driven by his hunger for power and therefore it wasn’t Macbeth was driven by his hunger for power and therefore it wasn’t Macbeth making conscious choices. As soon as Macbeth was given power it corrupted him. He became a different person whose actions were not of his normally. Macbeth was a courageous, selfless person before he was declared Thane of Cawdor, however when given power and the promise of more Macbeth transformed into someone different and ultimately became controlled by outside
