Macbeth was a very famous play during the renaissance that was written by William Shakesphere. He uses many elements within his writing such as characterization, language, imagery and themes. He uses these elements throughout his plays and sonnets to help gather the audience's attention and make them compelling and enduring. Many of the things Shakespeare wrote never went away or got lost in history, thousands of years later, today Shakespeare is still being taught and learned about. Theme allows the reader to understand the meaning behind the text and why the author wrote what they did. Ambition and power is the main theme seen throughout the play and story Macbeth. This is created when hubris and greed for power is left uncontrolled. When Macbeth was told about the possibility of becoming king that lit up the ambition within him. Together he and his wife commit more and more violent crimes that he believes will help him achieve his goal. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth sacrificed everything they had for ambition. Over time the theme of ambition became Macbeth's major flaw. As the play goes on the tension between Macbeth and the ambition to sacrifice everything to achieve his goal increases. Now at first Macbeth is very hesitant to resort to violence in service for his ambition, but with the encouragement from Lady Macbeth, he soon allows himself to sacrifice others to achieve his own needs. Imagery adds symbolism and enables the reader to imagine the world throughout literature. Although there are many things in Macbeth that symbolize important parts. Blood is the most important. It represents guilt that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth start to feel after committing the crimes that they did. It wasn't until the murder of King Duncan that they started to feel remorse for the violent acts they have done. As the guilt of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth grows within them, so does the importance of blood throughout the writing. They both soon lose a grasp on reality. Shakesphere often employs vivid and evocative imagery to create a sense of atmosphere and to convey the complex emotion and idea that are held within a person. In Act 1 Scene 5, Lady Macbeth “prays to the devil to make her blood so thick that pity cannot pass through”. Just before the murder of King Duncan, Macbeth sees a vision of a dagger floating in front of him in the castle. The tip of the dagger slowly points to Duncan while the handle points towards Macbeth, he wonders whether the dagger is real or not. When he notices that there is blood on the tip of the dagger Macbeth concludes that the dagger is not real but a manifestation of his guilt for plotting against Duncan.
