The act of creating texts in its nature involves experimentation and adaptation of different language and texture elements, while sustaining the value of original literary works. Authors express themes in their writing by using expression and varying techniques. William Shakespeare, a famous poet and playwright, is famous for his writings that portray key themes of tragedy, power, identity and love. Shakespeare conveyed these themes in his work on Macbeth and his influence on Mark Bronzel in his adaptation ‘Macbeth retold’. Shakespeare’s Macbeth is set in the eleventh century during the fight for the throne and the idea of war. The character of Macbeth was identified as a trusted and dependable hero, earning him the title “thane of kodor” for his deeds on the battlefield. This can be seen in the quote “like valors minion carved out his passage till he faced the slave which ne’er shook hands, nor bade farewell to him,till he unseamed him from the nave to th’chops’ and fixed his head upon our battlements.”Macbeth uses similes and a metaphor to further capture his Valor. Bronzel similarly explores these themes in his work through his character ‘Joe’ who plays a strong idea of respect in his kitchen earlier in the movie through his treatment of produce, animals and his care for his co-workers. Both authors use obviously different settings, but Bronzel doesn’t take away from the themes of the original Macbeth and instead helps the readers to see both characters and worlds in the same light. Through both characteristics of “lady Macbeth” and “Ella” they share similar personality traits including, manipulative, ambition and the willingness to do anything for her love interest.
