The song, “Shades of Cool” by Lana Del Rey reminds me and connects to the play, “Macbeth”. The song connects to Macbeth’s whole plot line in many different ways. The song is mainly about Macbeth and how he struggles with his guilt. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth meets three witches and Macbeth murders Duncan, who is the king of Scotland, at Macbeth’s home. In the beginning of the song, the song starts with a guitar playing a slow tempo. When Macbeth came back from murdering Duncan Macbeth told Lady Macbeth, “I have done the deed” (II.ii.19). The play and the song connect in a deep meaning. The slow tempo of the guitar playing in the beginning of the song reminds me of Macbeth who has already murdered Duncan. It reminds me of sorrow, which is how everyone feels when they hear the news of their great king being murdered. It reminds me of distress of all the murders that occurred just for power. Yet another death is to come. In the play Seyton tells Macbeth, “The Queen, my lord, is dead” (V.iv.19). Then come the last chorus of the song and once again, Macbeth is unfixable. At the end of the song, the song finishes with a final “Oooo.” Macduff kills Macbeth and tells everyone else, “Behold where stands Th’ usurper’s cursed head” (V.viii.65-66). The final “Oooo” reminds me of the final breath and not only the end to Macbeth’s life but to his guilt and sorrow. In conclusion, Macbeth is truly another great work of art from William Shakespeare. Many other works of art can relate to Macbeth and its incredible plot. To me Macbeth mainly represented sorrow guilt and madness.
