Themes in Macbeth Macbeth is play about craving power, contemplating your gender, and being defeated by your own ambition. These three themes in Macbeth have one general word in common its, Macbeth. Not only was Macbeth a power-hungry man defeated by his own ambitions, but also got look down upon especially by his wife for his unmanliness. He had one main goal in mind, to be king, and he wouldn’t let anyone or anything get in his way, even if that meant killing everyone in his path.
In Macbeth Act 4 Scene 2 Shakespeare shows three themes within this act with Lady Macduff and Ross her son. (Miller)Miller states about this scene that it is shakespeare's way of reflecting back on the play so far “Lady Macduff's much expanded role and the death she suffers, in contrast to her counterpart in Shakespeare's Macbeth”. The first theme that is showed is flying and it is showed in the first line of the scene by Lady Macduff with her talking to the messenger Ross when he arrives. In the following lines Lady Macduff expresses the second theme which is cowardice when she is talking to Ross the messenger she talks about how Macduff abandoning her and her son, she talks to Ross she calls Macduff a traitor. In this Shakespearean tragedy, Macbeth, numerous murders take place throughout the entire book. As the book goes on, there are more and more murders, one more well thought out than the last. William Shakespeare really shows how guilt can affect a person’s conscience and, when left with that guilt, how it can push you to the edge. Macbeth highlights corruption, guilt, persuasion, and the pursuit of power. The choices they make create a lot of uncertainty within themselves and eventually lead to their own downfall.
Guilt can be a major feature in people’s lives. This guilt will haunt the characters of Macbeth. Guilt will be a feeling that last forever. It is the feeling of responsibility for this poor action that has been committed. Macbeth just wanted to become king and have the crown.

[Comparison] Macbeth’s actions were executed in a mindless state where the only factors that could determine his future deeds were his prophecies from the witches and his manipulative wife. Both gain Macbeth’s trust, though the witches exploit his indivisible faith in the supernatural, whereas Lady macbeth utilizes her womanly qualities as his wife and his equal to gain control of Macbeth’s conscience.
The motif guilt shows characterization of remorse, and the theme conveyed is guilt stays within a person forever and not confessing leads to misery. After Macbeth murders Duncan, he begins to go insane and claim that he can no longer sleep. “Methought I heard a voice cry, ‘Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep’ . . . ‘Macbeth shall sleep no more’”
The story of Macbeth is one of the greatest in all of history, with its tales of betrayal, revenge, and witchcraft. Macbeth’s story has been remade over and over, telling the story of a false king, but there are also questions and mysteries left for us to find out. Shakespeare was never one to let things just exist; there was always a hidden meaning behind them. Take the porter scene from Act 2. It looks simple at first glance, but when dug deeper into it, it shows a deeper meaning.

Imagery in Macbeth Macbeth was written by William Shakespeare in 1606. This tragedy is set in Scotland during The Middle Ages. Published in 1623 with the first folio, the story of Macbeth was destined to be a staple in any reader’s Shakespeare collection.
“Still it cried ‘Sleep no more!’ to all the house”(2.2.39). The successful murder of the king sends people into a state of panic, “O horror, horror, horror! Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!”(2.3.57-58). Throughout the act, people start to calm down, or the theme changes, after they piece together the murder, the guards would’ve never been expected to be the murderers, which confuses them.
Today, many modern movies, dramas, and books include themes from and portions of The Tragedy of Macbeth written by Shakespeare. Besides influencing American entertainment, elements of the play are used in other countries, especially in the Korean drama, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God. It is about a warrior during the Goryeo dynasty who was executed by a malignant king, but the soldier was resurrected as a goblin, known as dokkaebi in Korea. The goblin has a sword stuck to his chest and can only die when the goblin’s bride is found to pull out the blade. Guardian: The Lonely and Great God includes parts of The Tragedy of Macbeth like the motif of prophecies and Macbeth’s vantage about life.
The theme of guilt is expressed by Lady Macbeth, who had taken part in many murders and had convinced her husband to join in. She eventually got consumed by guilt to the point where she took her own life. It is represented through blood imagery, where Lady Macbeth and Macbeth both interpreted the blood on their hands in different ways, but both still feeling the guilt. Lastly it is represented in Macbeth’s internal conflict. As he kills people throughout the play, his guild worsens to the point where he has become a tyrant.
